The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has introduced several important updates for 2026–2027 that directly impact game developers and other Interactive Digital Media (IDM) creators. Below is a summary of the changes and what they mean for your studio. The budget designated for IDM projects is seeing its biggest year-over-year growth since the CMF’s creation in 2010, increasing 36 per cent compared to 2025–2026 to $57M.
CMF is prioritizing ownership of the company and control of intellectual property (IP). This means that studios that retain ownership of their IP and demonstrate long-term control will be in a stronger position to receive funding.
Physical or immersive costs (XR installations) are now eligible for funding for up to 20% of budget in production. However, this funding is limited to projects testing in prototyping stages. This means more flexibility for immersive projects, as long as the digital content remains the focus.
Only first-time applicants may access this funding stream. This means returning applicants must apply to more advanced programs.
The main funding stream is evaluated on commercial viability, market opportunity, and profitability. Meanwhile, the third-party investment system requires 25% private investment, on a first-come first-served basis. This means that studios need investor relationships and market validation.
Projects may be ranked based on third-party financing. This means studios need investor relationships and market validation.
The Digial Creators Pilot Program has a focus on business development with up to $40,000 in funding. Meanwhile, there is also the New Business Development Program, with a focus on growth, partnerships, and revenue models. CMF is moving towards a market-driven model. Studios that are investment-ready and business-focused will be best positioned to succeed.
