Building Creative Pathways for Saskatchewan Game Developers
Saskatchewan’s game development scene continues to grow with the addition of innovative new studios, and Sour Circuit Studios is a standout example of that momentum. Based in Saskatoon, this indie game studio is developing its debut title, Shuffles ’n Scuffles, while also creating new opportunities for emerging talent in the province.
Founded in January 2025, Sour Circuit Studios was formed by alumni of the Recording Arts Institute of Saskatoon. What began as a final school project quickly evolved into a full commercial game, marking the studio’s official entry into the Canadian indie game development landscape.
Sour Circuit Studios was built with intention and collaboration at its core. Rather than waiting for traditional studio roles, the team created their own path forward, forming a part-time, collaborative studio model designed to support new graduates entering the industry.
This approach allows team members to continue developing professional experience while staying connected to Saskatchewan’s creative community. Through iterative development, peer collaboration, and guidance from industry mentors, Sour Circuit Studios focuses on refining bold ideas into polished, high-quality games that consistently punch above their weight.
Beyond their own projects, the studio hopes to demonstrate that there is a viable, sustainable path for emerging game developers in Saskatchewan, while shining a spotlight on the province’s often overlooked creative potential.
Shuffles ’n Scuffles is a whimsical roguelike deckbuilder with a unique twist. Players are not just collecting cards, they are creating them.
Set in a charming papercraft-inspired world, the game allows players to mix and match words on cards, resulting in thousands of possible combinations and playstyles. Every decision reshapes the deck, and every run offers new opportunities for experimentation and strategy.
With its emphasis on creativity, experimentation, and replayability, Shuffles ’n Scuffles invites players to rewrite the rules and discover new ways to outwit their opponents.
Shuffles ’n Scuffles is currently in development, with a playable demo available on Steam. The full game is scheduled to launch in Q1 2026, making it one to watch for fans of deckbuilders, roguelikes, and innovative indie games.
